The Wyoming Historical Society
is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization with the purpose of preservation, education, and appreciation of
Wyoming's history. We also disseminate historical and genealogical information pertaining
to Wyoming, Ohio. We encourage local historical research and promote interest in Wyoming's heritage.
The Historical Society was formally founded on November 12, 1981. Although its roots go back to the first Wyoming Historic House Tour, held in conjunction with the City of Wyoming's Centennial in 1974. The initial meeting was held in 1981 with ten Wyoming citizens attending. The Historical Society's purpose was defined as
"collecting and preserving historical materials and infomation and encouraging interest in Wyoming's heritage."
For several years, the Historical Society operated out of the homes of the officers and trustees.
An active schedule of community projects was organized, including annual educational meetings and a series of house tours, which were highlighted by Wyoming's listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
In 1993, the Historical Society obtained a permanent headquarters in the lower level of the city administration building at 800 Oak Avenue. This location serves as the focal point for the Historical Society's activities to this day.
The Historical Society currently has a vigorous program to collect, preserve and catalog items regarding
Wyoming's history. We are active in community events such as the July 4th Parade, the annual Fall Festival,
and Wyoming High School Alumni Round-Up Weekend. The archives of the Wyoming Women's Club,
Wyoming Junior Women's Club, Wyoming Tennis Association, Wyoming High School Alumni Association,
Wyoming Players and more have been entrusted to the Historical Society.
The Historical Society also promotes an Historic Marker project, with 3ft x 2ft bronze markers erected around the City.
The Wyoming Historical Society is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation.
